Our day started with a perfectly on-time hotel pickup by Alfredo in a spotless and very comfortable VW T7. From the very beginning, he made us feel welcome. His English is excellent, and throughout the day he shared so many interesting stories about Portugal, the Douro Valley, its history, and its wine culture. His passion and knowledge really made the experience special. Our first stop was a small, family-owned winery, where we learned a lot about the region and the winemaking process while enjoying a fantastic wine tasting in a very personal setting. After that, Alfredo took us to a stunning winery with breathtaking views. We enjoyed another excellent wine tasting followed by one of the best lunches we had during our stay in Portugal. The day continued with a stop at the beautiful Pinhão train station, famous for its traditional blue tile artwork, before we relaxed on a peaceful boat cruise along the Douro River. It was the perfect way to take in the incredible scenery. Overall, this was a truly unforgettable experience. Without Alfredo’s local knowledge and carefully planned itinerary, we could never have discovered the Douro Valley in such an authentic and enjoyable way on our own. 10/10 experience – highly recommended! “Best Private Wine Tour there is! Our private wine tour of the Douro Valley with Alfredo was the highlight of our trip! We were picked up at our hotel and transported with care into a day filled with magical moments! Not only is Alfredo knowledgeable about the beautiful area and the wine grown there, he delighted us with historical facts, humor, and a shared interest in music! Our first stop at Casa do Romezal was a beautiful start to our day. The owner Luis was filled with infectious enthusiasm for the area and the wines his family is blessed to produce there over many generations. His genuine love of the land and his heritage are evident in all he says and does. His wine and olive oil selections were as impressive and the estate the produces them. We loved them so much; we had some shipped home. The ordering and shipping process were easy and effortless! Because we were surprised to like Port so much, Alfredo made an unplanned stop at a nearby Port maker so that we could try Vintage and Late Bottled Vintage ports. It was an incredible experience! After a beautiful drive filled with stunning views, Alfredo took us to an incredible farm to table lunch at Cais da Ferradosa. Our multi-course meal of all locally sourced ingredients was paired with exquisite wines. It was at this meal that I learned to love port and tonic! Our food was flavorful, beautiful, and thoughtfully presented and prepared. This family-owned operation provided us with a five star experience and an amazing view! To complete our day, we were treated to a tasting of stunning selection of wines at small privately owned vineyard and hotel. This ideally located vineyard and hotel offered such an intimate experience with sweeping views of the Douro Valley. I kept thinking what a remarkable venue it would be for a destination wedding! All in all, our day was simply perfect. If you are looking for a personally curated tour away from crowds and cookie cutter itineraries, look no further!”
